“A tiny way to fight the big C”
 
Ranga Kumar joined the Adyar Cancer Institute as a volunteer some 20 years ago.
 
To start with, the volunteers assisted the poor and illiterate patients at the outpatients ward with paperwork. Then they felt there was a crying need to interact with them at a more emotional level. With permission from Dr Shantha, the institute's director, Ranga and another volunteer, Girija, started actively counselling cancer patients. Sanctuary itself came into existence 15 years ago.
 
Sanctuary volunteers thus give the patients a sense of belonging and a feeling that there is someone out there to talk to them and share their problems, and to reassure and provide them with emotional help. As counsellors, they do more of listening, and encourage the patients to open up and talk. The group has also formulated its own training programs, and one of the rules is, 'If you are stressed, you should call your co-volunteer, ventilate, and go home'.

“Hospices last hope for terminally ill”
 
Palliative care offers a holistic approach to physical, emotional, social and spiritual care. "It is technically the last six months of their life but it can extend up to one year." The Foundation, set up in 1998, takes "care of all patients dying of any disease." The 50-bed Jeevodaya Hospice at Mathur in Manali, which was set up in 1990, is a pioneer in offering care to cancer patients. The staff of Jeevodaya says there is a need for awareness of the concept. They give free palliative care to patients with advanced cancer. Hospices are the last resort for people sent away by hospitals when treatment does not help. More than 80 per cent of those requiring palliative care suffer from physical pain and need medical attention, they note. Pain, oozing ulcers, fall in haemoglobin count are factors the terminally ill have to contend with.

CANSTOP - Cancer Support Therapy to Overcome Pain
 
‘Canstop’, an organization that works towards adding meaning to cancer-afflicted children, was started by Dr Vijaya Bharathi Rangarajan as a tribute to the memory of her husband, Dr S Rangarajan who succumbed to cancer in June 1997. Dr Rangarajan was Founder Chairman and Managing Trustee of Sundaram Medical Foundation. It provides a wide range of outreach services for patients with cancer.
 
Canstop and children: Providing assistance to children of the poor with cancer is one of Canstop's first priorities. Activities include a Drug Bank to provide drugs to the needy, a Blood Bank, Play Therapy, the Milky Way scheme to supplement the diet of children with cancer, Mother's Friend programme to keep mothers employed during their child's treatment, and ‘CanWish’ to help fulfil the dreams of critically ill children.

Cancer used to be thought of as a virtual death sentence. Yet more and more people have learned to view this disease in a very different light. Many now recognize that living with cancer means learning to live with a chronic disease. It means learning how to manage symptoms and treatments while returning to as many of the normal activities of daily living as possible. It is important to have life go on as usual or at least as close to usual as you can make it.
 
The point is that a cancer diagnosis does not have to be absolutely devastating - although it can be if you let it. The key is to not feel as though you are a helpless victim of blind fate. Sometimes it may seem like a struggle, but you - just like many people before you - can learn to live with cancer.

Dr Palepu Jagannath, chairman, department of surgical oncology, Lilavati Hospital, Mumbai, launched the vertical portal, indiacancer.org in June 2000. This non-profit organization went on to include the Crusade Against Cancer Foundation.
 
The Web site contains information about cancer, how you can detect it, myths about cancer, treatment and care if you have the disease, cancer treatment for children and the medicines available. It also helps you search for specialists and cancer treatment centers. All patients who need financial help will be displayed as thumbnails; the donor can then choose the patient he wants to help. Once the patient receives the backing to take care of his/her treatment costs, his/her profile is taken off the list.
